Ways to Practice Sight Words at Home
Rainbow Words – Write each sight word using different color crayons.
Speed Reader – Use a stopwatch to time how fast your child can read their list of sight words or a stack of sight word cars. Record their times. Have them read the cards again to see if they can beat their previous time.
Messy Spellers – Place sugar, sand, whipped cream, or shaving cream on a cookie sheet. Have your child write the sight words using their finger.
Slap the Word – Lay out 3 to 5 sight word cards face up on a table. Call out a word to your child. Have your child slap the word with a fly swatter, a spatula, or their hand.
Fancy Words – Have your child read and write sight words using fancy, silly, or bubble writing.
Memory – Make two sets of sight word flash cards. Place matching pairs of sight word cards face down in front of your child. Your child should flip two cards over at a time to see if they can find a pair. Make sure they read the words to you as they flip them over.
Hide and Seek – Hide the sight words around a room or the house. Have your child try to find the sight words and read them.
Tic-Tac-Toe – Draw a tic-tac-toe board on a piece of paper. Write a sight word in each square. Read a sight word to your child. They will cover up the sight word with a penny. Keep calling out sight words until your child has tic-tac-toe or fills the board.
Funny Voices – Have your child practice saying and spelling the sight words using funny voices – a baby, robot, cowboy, old person, etc.
